Malcolm is made a Knight

Historical Records of the Family of Leslie from 1067 to 1868

This fantastic resource details the early history of the Leslie Clan.  Here we learn about Laird Malcolm de Leslie, 1st Constable of Inverurie, son of the progenitor Bartholomew Leslie, and how he was awarded a knighthood by King William the Lion for bravery and other noble qualities.

Malcolm received a charter of confirmation of his lands of “Lessel, Hachennegart, and Mache” which would have included the lands at Leslie Castle, from the Kings brother for his service.  This is the most ancient charter of any lands in Aberdeenshire, except church-lands, and must have been granted after 1165, when William the Lion succeeded to the throne of Scotland, and before 1197, when Matthew, Bishop of Aberdeen, who is a witness to the charter, died.

Malcolm’s wife’s name is not recorded, but it is certain that he had two sons by her   Norman, his successor and Malcolm, who was killed in the Crusades.
